The Baker's Wife. A story of a village craving bread, a baker who gets drunk and has a week-long hangover, the Baker's wife who's only real friend is a cat and a man-slut.
I know, it sounds ludicrous but it's a truly fantastic musical. Music and lyrics by the amazing Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Children of Eden, Godspell, Hunchback of Notre Damn etc.) and book by Joseph Stein (Fiddler On The Roof).
I think you generally get the jist of those details so I'll move right along to my experience in the theatre...
First off, THE MAN NEXT TO ME WAS THE MOST ANNOYING KIND OF THEATRE-GOER EVER. The kind who think they are absolute experts on everything, WHEN THEY KNOW NOTHING! God, he was SO annoying and he smelt as well. At one point he goes to me "Did you know the man who wrote the score also wrote 'Hairspray'". I politely replied "really? wow". BUT I WANTED TO STAND UP AND SLAP HIM, HE WAS SUCH AN IDIOT!!!
right, that's over...
This was a truly fantastic production, the best I've ever seen FMT perform. My highest praise goes to Michelle Poutney-Langham who played the role of "Denise", her rendition of 'Chanson' was beautiful and it opened the show perfectly.
Another massive gold star goes towards the orchestra, they were wonderful, usually "Am Dram" orchestras don't sound amazing, but this one really did it for me and sounded almost professional. Well done to MD Andrew Burke.
Now of course I must give praise to the leads though. First, Kellyanne Crane who played the role of "Genevieve" was amazing. She reminded me a lot of recent tony-winner Alice Ripley (who also played Genevieve in the US tour of The Baker's Wife). Also, Alex Shulver who played "Aimable" was also amazing, but he's been amazing in every production I've ever seen him in.
Chris Branch who played "Dominique" was also very good considering it was his first ever time 'treading the boards'
All of the supporting cast were fantastic as well, the male ensemble had me laughing the whole way through, especially Wes Moore who played the role of "Antoine".
David Crane did a wonderful job directing this production (as usual). He also played the small role of "Phillipe" who had to sing quite a high note during the 'Serenade' number. Even though it was such a small thing, that one note really did it for me. Congrats Mr. Crane!
My favourite numbers were definetly 'Chanson', 'Any Day Now Day', 'World's Luckiest Man / Feminine Companionship' and 'If I Have To Live Alone'.
But the highlight of the whole show for me was the Finale sequence. The duet between Aimable and Genivieve was sweet, then Denise's reprise of 'Chanson' was beautiful again. Then the simple 'lala' from the ensemble really rounded the whole production up.
Sure there were a couple of things that I thought that could of been improved upon, but they are ferociously outweighed by the positive things I have to say. Many congratulations to the cast and all the best for your next production, 'The Railway Children'.
'Till next time guys ;)
